Melvin Udall is a man consumed by his own neuroses and prejudices. As the misanthropic and obsessive-compulsive writer of successful romantic novels, he takes great pleasure in belittling and mocking those around him, including his neighbor Simon, who just happens to be gay. When Simon falls ill and is hospitalized, Melvin's life is suddenly turned upside down. As Melvin navigates the unfamiliar terrain of responsibility and empathy, he finds himself drawn to Carol Connelly, a dog-eared and chain-smoking waitress at a local diner.
